MANILA, Philippines - Contrary to expectations, Philippine mobile phone companies are expected to benefit from lower text messaging charges “since it will encourage more people to use the service," an analyst said.

Instead of being detrimental, the rate cut could increase revenues, Grace Cerdenia of online brokerage company 2tradeasia.com said.

“Revenues will be volume-driven," she said, referring to a move to reduce text messaging fees by half to P0.50, which was announced by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during her annual report to Congress on Monday.

Before being overtaken by China, the Philippines was considered as the world’s text messaging capital, with more than 50 million subscribers as of the first quarter this year.

Last year, an estimated one billion text messages were sent everyday.

However, lower text charges are only good until October.

For his part, Smart Communications, Inc spokesperson Ramon Isberto said that it is too early to tell how the new promotion will affect the company’s revenues.

“It is designed to provide an alternative to customers who want to send messages also to other networks. Let’s see how it goes, if the market accepts it," Isberto said in a phone interview.

Sun Cellular officials could not be reached for comment, but company senior vice president for legal affairs William B. Pamintuan earlier said it will “respond" to industry rates.

Globe Telecoms Inc refused to comment. - GMANews.TV

Quezon City is the most competitive city in Metro Manila and is ranked No. 2 in the entire Philippines.

These were the findings of an international study, the "Philippine Competitiveness Ranking Project 207," which evaluated 20 cities in the country and ranked them according to how effective they were in providing an environment conducive to business and industry.

Quezon City was cited especially for the dynamism of its local economy, the quality of life of its residents and the responsiveness of the local government to business needs. Other criteria used were human resource and training, infrastructure and cost of doing business.

Quezon City Mayor Feliciano "Sonny" Belmonte Jr. attributed Quezon City's remarkable performance to his strategy of "balanced development" which seeks to effectively address the fundamentals of quality living as well as business productivity. This significant transformation over the almost seven years of his administration has earned both local and global recognition.

In the overall Philippine ranking, Quezon City was outranked only by Davao City, but it led Makati, Manila, Marikina, Lapu-Lapu City and Parañaque, among the top seven cities.

The Asian Institute of Management Policy Center in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Asia Foundation, the German Development Cooperation and the International Labor Organization spearheaded the study, called "Pinoy Cities on the Rise!" The study bases its methodology on that used by the Swiss-based International Institute for Management Development, which prepares the World Competitiveness Yearbook.

The study also evaluated mid-sized and small cities, where Olongapo topped the mid-sized category and San Fernando City was no. 1 in the small category list. - /Philstar

Blog EntryFilipino language is set to go international !!Jun 22, '08 9:05 PM
for everyone

Presidential adviser on education Dr. Mona Valisno announced that the government of New Zealand has expressed interest in studying the Filipino language as a second language in their schools as a way to forge a broader and deeper cultural exchange with the Philippines.

Valisno met and talked to New Zealand's Minister of Education Chris Carter at the 4th Asia Pacific Economic Conference Education Ministerial Meeting in Lima, Peru last June 11 to 13 and both had agreed to adopt the Filipino language as the chosen foreign language to be taught in New Zealand's schools. The 4th APEC education summit focused on international exchange in education and culture.

"This is a major accomplishment for us. If we can push this through, maybe we can have other countries do the same. This will be very great for the Philippines' international relations and our image abroad," Valisno said.

There are some 13,000 Filipinos living and working in New Zealand and with the project, New Zealanders will better understand the Filipino culture and psychology and remove the language barrier between them, Valisno said.

Likewise, the proposal to include the study of Filipino language in New Zealand schools will expand the trade and culture exchanges between the two countries.

"Mr. Carter said himself that there are about 13,000 Filipinos in New Zealand. If they will study and learn our language, they can have a greater understanding of our OFWs there which would be good for our countrymen," Valisno said.

The inclusion will likewise provide jobs to Filipinos since the schools would have to hire Pinoy teachers specializing in teaching Tagalog.

In one of the small group discussion among education officials from various countries where the study of each other's languages was discussed, Valisno took the opportunity to talk to Carter, who was her seatmate, about the possibility of including the Filipino language as the second language to be studied in New Zealand schools. Carter was won over.

"One of the things we have agreed on is that there should be a greater effort at learning each other's language. We agreed that this is critical because we now live in a global economy," Valisno said.

Valisno said another important issue that was discussed in the conference was the benchmarking of standards of professional education programs of schools in APEC member countries, especially at a time when the Philippines is facing "difficulties in the recognition of its Filipino professionals in other countries." - Rainier Allan Ronda/Philstar

Blog Entrywow grabe! almost true!Apr 25, '08 2:16 AM
for everyone

Welcome Jayson James Tiu, here is your handwriting analysis.

Jayson James is moderately outgoing. His emotions are stirred by sympathy and heart rendering stories. In fact, he can be kind, friendly, affectionate and considerate of others. He has the ability to put himself into the other person's shoes.

Jayson James will be somewhat moody, with highs and lows. Sometimes he will be happy, the next day he might be sad. He has the unique ability to get along equally well with what psychology calls introverts and extroverts. This is because he is in between. Psychology calls Jayson James an ambivert. He understands the needs of both types. Although they get along, he will not tolerate anyone that is too "far out." He doesn't sway too far one way or the other.

When convincing him to buy a product or an idea, a heart rendering story could mean a great deal to him. He puts himself in the same situation as the person in the story, yet he will not buy anything that seems overly impractical or illogical. Jayson James is an expressive person. He outwardly shows his emotions. He may even show traces of tears when hearing a sad story.

Jayson James is a "middle-of-the-roader," politically as well as logically. He weighs both sides of an issue, sits on the fence, and then will decide when he finally has to. He basically doesn't relate to any far out ideas and usually won't go to the extreme on any issue.

People that write their letters in an average height and average size are moderate in their ability to interact socially. According to the data input, Jayson James doesn't write too large or too small, indicating a balanced ability to be social and interact with others.

Jayson James will demand respect and will expect others to treat him with honor and dignity. Jayson James believes in his ideas and will expect other people to also respect them. He has a lot of pride.

Jayson James will be candid and direct when expressing his opinion. He will tell them what he thinks if they ask for it, whether they like it or not. So, if they don't really want his opinion, don't ask for it!

Jayson James has a desire for attention. People around Jayson James will notice this need. He may fulfill this need by a variety of ways depending on his own character.

In reference to Jayson James's mental abilities, he has a very investigating and creating mind. He investigates projects rapidly because he is curious about many things. He gets involved in many projects that seem good at the beginning, but he soon must slow down and look at all the angles. He probably gets too many things going at once. When Jayson James slows down, then he becomes more creative than before. Since it takes time to be creative, he must slow down to do it. He then decides what projects he has time to finish. Thus he finishes at a slower pace than when he started the project.

He has the best of two kinds of minds. One is the quick investigating mind. The other is the creative mind. His mind thinks quick and rapidly in the investigative mode. He can learn quicker, investigate more, and think faster. Jayson James can then switch into his low gear. When he is in the slower mode, he can be creative, remember longer and stack facts in a logical manner. He is more logical this way and can climb mental mountains with a much better grip.

Jayson James is a practical person whose goals are planned, practical, and down to earth. This is typical of people with normal healthy self-esteem. He needs to visualize the end of a project before he starts. he finds joy in anticipation and planning. Notice that I said he plans everything he is going to do, that doesn't necessarily mean things go as planned. Jayson James basically feels good about himself. He has a positive self-esteem which contributes to his success. He feels he has the ability to achieve anything he sets his mind to. However, he sets his goals using practicality-- not too "out of reach". He has enough self-confidence to leave a bad situation, yet, he will not take great risks, as they relate to his goals. A good esteem is one key to a happy life. Although there is room for improvement in the confidence catagery, his self-perception is better than average.

Jayson James is sarcastic. This is a defense mechanism designed to protect his ego when he feels hurt. He pokes people harder than he gets poked. These sarcastic remarks can be very funny. They can also be harsh, bitter, and caustic at the same time.

Jayson James has a temper. He uses this as a defense mechanism when he doesn't understand how to handle a situation. Temper is a hostile trait used to protect the ego. Temper can be a negative personality trait in the eyes of those around him.

Jayson James has difficulty trusting anyone. In fact, he trusts no one completely. This is a result of his trust being betrayed in the past. He has closed up, thus ceasing to allow close friendships. Jayson James truly wants close friends and desires physical relationships, but he fears he will get hurt, again. He is lonely, yet has a crying need for close friends. This trait can cause much unhappiness. However, it can be changed.

Jayson James is selective when picking friends. He does not trust everyone. He has a select group of people that are truly close to him, usually two or three. He is careful when choosing his inner circle of friends.

Jayson James has a healthy imagination and displays a fair amount of trust. He lets new people into his circle of friends. He uses his imagination to understand new ideas, things, and people.

Jayson James exaggerates about everything that has a physical nature. Although he may not intend to deceive or mislead, he blows things way out of proportion because that is the way he views them. He will be a good story teller. This exaggeration relates to all areas of his material world. Jayson James allows many people into his life because he is accepting and trusting. He is sometimes called gullible by his friends. That only really means that he trusts too many people. Jayson James has a vivid imagination.

For a graphologist, the spacing on the page reflects the writer's attitude toward their own world and relationship to things in his or her own space. If the inputted data was correct Jayson James has left lots of white space on the all four borders of the paper. Jayson James fills up just the center area of the page. If this is true, then Jayson James has a particular shyness toward people and a fear of moving too fast in any direction. In some cultures, respecting people, rules, and adhering to protocol are ways of life.

The right side of the page represents the future and the left side represents the past. Jayson James seems a bit stuck in the middle, afraid to take action.

Jayson James seems to have a fear of looking bad or of crossing boundries. It will be easy to work with Jayson James on a team, because Jayson James will usually follow the rules. However, this desire to respect the boundries can often be construed as a lack of confidence and people will walk over Jayson James if he is not careful.

"  How dare Teri throw such a despicable line! Tell me how far had she gone in her academics to insult physicians esp. of Pinoy race? Doesn't she know that Filipinos rate better on USMLE exams and perform way better in clinical practice than Americans do? 25% of American students cant even locate their country on the map and now she dares to look down ion the noblest profession? Am sure her nose was done by a Pinoy. "
